In this manual the puppet artist Roosa Halme looks into the essence of block theatre and shares her experiences on block theatre work in different environments. We also get parallel views to the world of Block Theatre through Kai Ruohonen, the visual artist behind the blocks, Matthew Bernier, a professor of art therapy, and Marja Susi, a psychologist and a puppetry artist. This manual offers new ideas and methods into interaction with people from all age groups and from different cultural backgrounds. The manual is available in English, and from March 2023 on, also in Swedish.

LIVING SCULPTURE I

Living Sculpture I block set is an art-driven aid for playing, consisting of blocks made out of birch, oak, and hazel. The wood have been chosen for their durability and their distinctive colors. The made-to-order blocks are unique and hand-made locally. In making the blocks, aesthetic, ethic, and ecological values come first, never forgetting safe use for all ages.
The Living Sculpture I is made by puppet artist Roosa Halme, based on the blocks designed by artist Kai Ruohonen. The blocks are manufactured by carpenters Kari Haikonen and Timo Lehtinen.

The Living Sculpture II block set is a functional piece that changes its form and lives. The material for the block set are geometrical basic forms and their derivatives, based on the traditional, approachable building blocks. Building with blocks is a form of sculpture, and with blocks you can carve an unlimited number of different entities, shapes and meanings. The organic blocks are 100 % recyclable – both the material and the forms.

KO-KOO-MO: LIVING SCULPTURE exhibition consists of block sculptures to admire and block sets to touch and construct into a shape of one’s own vision. Living Sculpture is interactive art, guiding the visitor to build their own block art out of the Living Sculpture block set and to photograph it. The exhibition includes a Block Theatre performance in the inauguration.

In block theatre, imagination, with the help of wooden blocks, guides the spectator to a range of different worlds. The non-verbal performance captures the audience, and the puppeteer, together with the music and the rest of the soundscape, breaths life to the blocks.
Block theatre is a visual art form that stirs the viewer’s imagination. The performance opens new points of view for creativity, with the work of art gaining a new layer from each spectator’s unique interpretation.
The show is suitable for all ages. The show accommodates ca. 60 spectators. The show can be performed in an auditorium, a recreation room, or a similar space, where there is room for a 2m x 2m free space near to a power socket. It’s great if you can dim the room, but it’s not an absolute necessity.

In the workshop the participants get to build sculptures stemming from their own lives, using different themes such as family or a place that’s important to you. The orderer can also suggest their own themes for the workshop.
Building scenes from your own life encourages active agency and can support the participant’s self expression. A block theatre workshop can give the participant new self-knowledge and self-respect.

METHOD TRAINING

During the training you get to know the working principles and procedures of the Block theatre method. After the training, the participants can organize workshops for their own clients and collaborators.​
The aim of the training is to use block theatre as a way of finding new, approachable, and creative ways and levels of communication. In addition, it enables cultural understanding and dialog between people from different cultural backgrounds.

Variation no I studies creation and destruction, both deeply rooted in human beings. The peculiar dramaturgy for the wooden blocks emerges from a space, where the most basic of forms, patterns and movement follow their own rules. The message of the show is not aimed at a particular target or age group.

VARIATION no II – MY BLOCKS OF LIFE

Variation no II – My Blocks of Life is an inclusive piece where the participant build scenes from their own life. The participants take the stage with help from the wooden blocks from the Human-Shaped Reconstruction Kit, designed by artist Kai Ruohonen. The performance’s dramaturgy follows a series of tasks. The piece encourages active agency, and can support the participant’s self-knowledge and self-respect.
The works built during the performance are photographed and printed with a Polaroid camera, and each spectator gets their own block comic to take with them and contemplate.
